Our 4 Medical Aestheticians and I often get asked, “What are the “must have” skin products that I should be using daily that actually help reverse the signs of aging”. The top 2 that always come to mind are Retinol and Vitamin C. These highly active ingredients re-build the collagen in your skin and will improve your skin’s thickness, texture, glow, health and overall youthfulness.
Following a skin care regimen at home with products that have “active” ingredients is the most effective way to build collagen and keep your skin looking youthful. Medical grade products contain higher actives in their ingredients than products that are obtained online or in department/drugstores. The prescription version of retinol, Tretinoin, is the most potent form of retinol and is the only FDA approved topical to treat wrinkles.
MORE ON THE POWER OF RETINOL
Retinol is a pure and highly active form of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is so effective because it is one of the few compounds with a tiny enough molecular structure that it can penetrate the outer layer of skin to work within the lower layers of your dermis where elastin and collagen reside. Retinol stimulates fibroblasts, cells that create collagen and inhibit collagen destroying enzymes. This “repair process” creates smoother and most importantly firmer youthful skin.
Retinol also has the power to make skin look younger by speeding up cell turnover in order to diminish sun damage and wrinkles. This normal exfoliation process slows down with age, allowing layers of dead, thick, sun damaged skin cells to remain on the surface. Retinol is also praised for its ability to produce new collagen.
Studies have found that cell rejuvenation due to Retinol application produces healthier, plumper skin cells. As we age skin cells start to become slightly misshapen and altered in appearance. The new skin cells stimulated by use of Retinol start to more closely resemble the younger, healthier skin cells of our youth.
When it comes to acne, retinol is also extremely effective because it helps acne by unclogging pores, controlling oil production, and preventing acne from forming. Retinol products are also excellent to help treat hyperpigmentation caused by acne breakouts.
THE CRITICAL ROLE OF TOPICAL VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is a very potent antioxidant for your skin and is a protector against sun damage created by UVB and UVA sunlight damage. Topical Vitamin C augments your skins ability to neutralize past free radical damage. Used appropriately our Ageless Medical Vitamin C is also an excellent healer as Vitamin C is a stimulant to wound healing. Scientific studies show that Vitamin C used on a daily basis has increased elasticity in the skin by 14%.
So besides being the most effective skin anti-oxidant, an anti-inflammatory and a collagen stimulator, Vitamin C also hydrates your skin.
COLLAGEN BUILDING COMBO
Both Vitamin C and Retinol work synergistically by helping to shed the outer layer of dead skin and sending a signal to the deeper layers of skin to “activate” thus building more collagen. We have seen that patients who combine these 2 active serums get excellent results. A sun-screen absolutely needs to be used with these products and should always be included in your skin regimen.
