Common Questions
The strongest laser treatment available, the CO2 (fractional carbon dioxide laser) treats skin in need of significant resurfacing. With one treatment, the CO2 laser can dramatically improve fine lines, widespread dark spots, and large pores for overall smoother, softer skin and even skin tone.
Your medical skin practitioner will assess your skin and review your medical history to determine if CO2 is the right choice for you. If your skin needs allover resurfacing for multiple reasons, and you have 1 to 2 weeks to dedicate to healing as your skin repairs from the inside out, CO2 offers remarkable results in one treatment.
Most patients require just one treatment from the powerful CO2 laser to achieve maximum results.
Once your 1 to 2 weeks of downtime is complete, you will begin to experience the dramatic results of your CO2 laser treatment. Full results will be visible a few months later as your skin continues to repair and renew.
The CO2 laser is an ablative treatment, which means along with sending energy below the skin to stimulate collagen production, it removes the top layers of old, dead skin cells. Following a CO2 laser treatment, your skin will feel sunburnt, and for up to a week, it will peel. After about a week, your skin will be pink, but you can start wearing makeup. Although you can physically return to normal activities in a day or two, plan to give yourself at least a week before going out in public. Within two weeks, you should be back to your regular life, but you will need to stay out of the sun for at least a month following treatment.
CO2 lasers can be performed on the face or any area of the body in need of total skin resurfacing. The most common areas are the face, neck, and décolletage.
Before treatment, we apply a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Patients report that it feels like pricking or tiny needles. More importantly, following treatment, 1 to 2 weeks of downtime is required during which you will be pink/red and peel. It is important to give your skin time to heal from this powerful treatment.
Contraindications include use of medications like Accutane or patients with a history of scarring, hemophilia, immunodeficiency, or difficulty healing.
